Paul Kemp is a mediator, serving as a point of contact for the problems faced by the people who visit his practice. His clients come from all walks of life. Yet, while Paul is inventive and agile in handling other people's conflicts, he struggles significantly with the conflicts in his own life—where things seem to be gradually spiraling out of control. He has to cope with his wife Ella’s affair with their neighbor Christian, reconcile with his brother Luis at the behest of his mother Franziska, and try to understand his teenage son, Tim. Furthermore, Paul faces trouble with his business partner, Mark Braun, who first drove the firm into debt and then skipped town. A brief fling with Lisa turns into a long-term disaster. And Paul’s wife discovers she is pregnant but doesn't know who the father is: her husband or her lover?
