Muchos sacerdotes participaron en la elaboración de listas de personas que debían ser detenidos y/o fusilados durante la represión franquista en la Guerra Civil. También muchos curas continuamente hacian discursos arengando el asesinato de rojos, marxista,... y algunos sacerdotes incluso participaron en torturas y fusilamientos.
La idea de interpretar la Guerra Civil como una cruzada fue una idea de la Iglesia tras el golpe de Estado de 1936 y no de los golpistas militares inicialmente (Mola, Franco,...).
