A small Western town is suffering from a food and supply shortage because a fearsome band of outlaws is preventing shipments from reaching their destination. U.S. Marshal John Carruthers (John Wayne) is sent undercover to the area to unmask the thieves and bring them to justice. However, while observing one of the robberies from a distance, he is discovered by Jake, the local sheriff (George 'Gabby' Hayes), who immediately suspects him. But when the sheriff attempts to arrest him, John saves his life, leading the two to join forces to ensure the supplies finally reach the town.
