This is a magnificent 1950 film adaptation based on Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play. Set in 1640s Paris, it tells the adventures and misfortunes of Cyrano (José Ferrer), an intrepid swordsman with a considerably large nose. Though deeply in love with Roxanne, his insecurities over his "enormous" feature lead him to help Christian, another young cavalier, in his quest to win her heart. To do so, Cyrano uses his incredible poetic talent and true feelings, pouring them onto paper with his finest verses. The film won the Academy Award for Best Actor (José Ferrer) and earned two Golden Globes: Best Cinematography (Frank Planer) and Best Actor – Drama (José Ferrer). It was also nominated for two additional Golden Globes (Best Picture – Drama and Most Promising Newcomer: Mala Powers), as well as a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement (Michael Gordon).
