Todd Philips confirmed that the scene of the Joker dancing in a bathroom in front of the mirror was totally improvised. The original script said that Arthur should throw away the gun and regret what he had done but neither the director nor Joaquin Phoenix believed that this would be something the Joekr would do so it was decided to improvise in this scene.
