NOTE: Volker Schlöndorff recorded an English-language commentary track for the film's DVD release which runs 141 minutes. The film has since then been restored and released in a version that runs 163 minutes and that's the version most of us know. To create this video, I married an audio recording of the commentary track with a DVD-rip of the film in German and added subtitles. Note that when the director isn't talking, there's no audio at all and those parts of the film are completely silent.
Original title: Die Blechtrommel
Oskar Matzerath is a very unusual boy. Refusing to leave the womb until promised a tin drum by his mother, Agnes, Oskar is reluctant to enter a world he sees as filled with hypocrisy and injustice, and vows on his third birthday to never grow up. Miraculously, he gets his wish. As the Nazis rise to power in Danzig, Oskar wills himself to remain a child, beating his tin drum incessantly and screaming in protest at the chaos surrounding him.
Release date April 11, 1980 (USA)
Actors: Mario Adorf, Angela Winkler, David Bennent, Katharina Thalbach, Daniel Olbrychski, Tina Engel, Berta Drews, Roland Teubner, Tadeusz Kunikowski, Andréa Ferréol, Heinz Bennent
Director Volker Schlöndorff
Story by Günter Grass * For more by this filmmaker:
