In October 2022, Joseph Mario Castorena violated a protection order obtained by his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Serrano, by breaking into her family home in Aurora, Colorado. He fatally shot four family members while Jessica and her two children, who were present, managed to survive unharmed. Castorena fled the scene, sparking a months-long manhunt.
He was captured in Mexico in December 2022 with the help of the FBI and local law enforcement and was extradited to Colorado in March 2023. After a nine-day trial in May 2024, Castorena was found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He received four consecutive life sentences without parole and an additional 24 years for the attempted murder charge.
During sentencing, Arapahoe County District Judge David Karpel condemned Castorena as an "insignificant, little man with a big gun" who used violence to exert control. The judge highlighted the severe impact of Castorena's actions on the victims' families, underscoring the brutality of the crimes.
