John Haloran suffers a sudden heart attack during a boat trip with his wife, Louise, on the lake leading to the Haloran family castle. His death means Louise will lose her inheritance, which is contingent upon her husband remaining alive. Consequently, she decides to throw his body overboard and sends his family a forged letter claiming he had to leave on an unexpected business trip.
