A ship is forced to dock at the port of Pago Pago, a peaceful and simple village on a South Pacific island, due to a potential cholera outbreak detected on board. Among the passengers are a missionary couple, Mr. Davidson (Walter Huston) and his wife, who take advantage of the delay to bring the Word of God to the American soldiers stationed there. Also on board is Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford), an attractive woman of questionable reputation, who quickly turns the quiet settlement upside down with her scandalous behavior. These events lead Mr. Davidson to become obsessed with her redemption, even using his influence to try and force her back to San Francisco. He is unaware that this would ruin her, as she would have to answer for crimes she committed there. Coming to her aid is Sergeant Tim O'Hara (William Gargan), who has fallen hopelessly in love with her. The film is masterfully directed by the renowned Lewis Milestone, a two-time Academy Award winner for Best Director for All Quiet on the Western Front and Two Arabian Knights, and a multi-time nominee throughout his career.
